Q: On a pass from A3 to A4 in the front court, B2 deflects the pass and then A4 tips the ball in the frontcourt before A3 gains control of the ball in the backcourt. Is the official correct in calling a violation for the ball returned to the backcourt?

A: Yes

Reason.  A4 was the last to touch the ball with Team A control before A3 gained control of the ball in the backcourt

30-7 - A live ball is illegally returned to the backcourt when a team A player who is completely in the frontcourt causes the ball to touch the backcourt, after which a team A player is the first to touch the ball either in the frontcourt or the backcourt. However, it is legal when a team A player in the backcourt causes the ball to touch the frontcourt, after which a team A player is the first to touch the ball, either in the frontcourt or in the backcourt
