Question: Coach Kirby Schepp from the U of MB has been warning that, as the Canadian game evolves toward the international game, it is/will become increasingly difficult to perform an open step drive to the basket without being called for travelling. What is your perspective as an official? Would you still teach kids the open step drive?
Answer: The only advise that I can offer here is to emphasize the fact that, by rule, in order to start a dribble, the pivot foot may not be lifted before the ball is released from the hand(s). This should be the primary message to the players when teaching any type of drive to the basket move.
